Stan Heptinstall, Churchwarden at St Michael’s Church in Bramcote has told us:
In October we give thanks for our plenty during our Harvest Thanksgiving with special services on Sunday 31st October. It is at times like harvest when we stop to reflect on how fortunate we are that we have plenty of food and water available. It provides the perfect opportunity to help others.
If you prefer to give a donation of MONEY in thanks for our plenty, it has been agreed that monetary donations given at these services will be given to Tearfund for their Toilet Twinning project. There are at least 1.7 billion people – 40% of the world’s population – who don’t have anywhere safe, clean, or hygienic to go to the toilet (WHO/Unicef).
Last year Toilet Twinning enabled thousands of people around the world
to use a toilet for the first time ever.
The difference a toilet makes: In Ethiopia, Tadelech’s eight children were constantly sick, and she spent what little money she had on expensive medicines to try and make them better. The Kale Heywet Church’s development team came and told her village about the link between sanitation and health. They showed her how to build a lasting toilet using local materials and told her about the importance of washing hands.
For them and many other communities, hearing about the link between sanitation and health is a revelation: a light bulb moment. Many have never known why diarrhoea is so common, and why their children have fallen ill or died. Suddenly, they understand. And then they want a toilet – that they build themselves. Because a family who have built their own toilet is much more likely to use it and look after it. Dignity is restored when the whole family can use a private, hygienic toilet at their home and no longer have to squat in the bush.
Toilet Twinning was formed in 2010 in response to the global sanitation crisis and is part of Tearfund. With Toilet Twinning, for each £60 given, we can twin a toilet at church with an overseas toilet and, as individuals, we can also twin our own toilets. Every donation of £60 helps fund a project in a poor community that will enable families to build a basic toilet, have access to clean water, and learn about hygiene – a vital combination that saves lives. A certificate is also provided to hang by each toilet showing a photograph of its overseas toilet twin and GPS coordinates so you can look up the twin’s location on Google Maps.
YOUR MONEY CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
Each £60 will spark an amazing chain reaction that is changing entire communities for ever:
One light bulb moment, one toilet at a time.
YOUR MONEY CAN HELP CHANGE LIVES!
Your gift means less disease and sickness.
Clean water, toilets and hygiene kits will transform lives today when we give in thanks for our plenty.
As Jesus said, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ (Matthew 25 verse 40).
Toilet Twinning is part of Tearfund, Registered Charity Number 26546 and you may donate directly via their website if you don’t plan to attend the service.
