  1. Perhaps they will review the areas that don’t have Tory Councillors.
    Bramcote, Stapleford and Eastwood are notable in the poor state of their arterial and local roads.

    1. Most idiots cycle on pavements already, joyfully endangering pedestrians and not giving a fig for the law. As do these dangerous battery-powered scooters ridden by arrogant loonies.
      Coppers drive past and see these but do nowt.

      1. So, Ian most idiots spend their time cycling round endangering pedestrians…I wonder what the remaining idiots are doing.
        Could it be driving so as to endanger the lives of cyclists thus forcing them to take refuge on the footpath?

        I suggest that were you to count the number of life threatening events perpetrated by careless drivers and the number of such incidents threatening pedestrians that you will find the reason cyclists use footpaths.

        Many roads here and elsewhere are over crowded (especially in rush hours) and contain many a hazard; sudden narrowing, blind spots, unsafe junctions.. I suggest that our cycling MP spends time with a cyclist or three to identify these hazards and sets up a program to eliminate them.
        After all encouraging cycling is the only policy his party has that makes even a smidgeon of sense.

  3. Michael H – is it unlawful or not to cycle on pavements? Are pavements meant for pedestrians or vehicles? There is absolutely no excuse for grown-ups cycling on pavements – and yes that does endanger pedestrians using the same pavement. Daily i witness cyclists hurtling along pavements oblivious to pedestrians or the potential for a car to emerge from a driveway. But guess who would be blamed if there was an unfortunate accident – not the uninsured cyclist.

  4. I suggest you record each incident (there are clearly a lot of them) logging the time, location, your perception of the level of risk to the pedestrians, number of cyclists and pedestrians involved and whatever else you feel is necessary… and report the results to the appropriate authorities.

    1. Michael H – Thank you for your helpful suggestion. However, there is no point: we both know that no action wil be taken by ‘the authorities’. We even no longer have PCSOs challenging cylists (or escooter-riders) weaving at speed along Beeston High Road during hours when cycling is banned by a local bylaw.
      I am concerned that your response suggests you might consider the practice of cycling on pavements presents no/minimal risk to pedestrians. Effective action would be a stick through the spokes. You have avoided giving your opinion on whether cycling on pavements is lawful or unlawful.

  5. The point of this post is, I think, to note that funds may be available to make improvements to our local road system. I would like it to go towards eliminating hazards, especially those that endanger cyclists.
    I am not a high court judge so my opinion on legal matters is irrelevant.

      By the same token you’re also saying you have no idea whether murder is unlawful, only a high court judge can opine on the matter.

      1. I cycle and I really enjoy it. The only time I cycle on a pavement is if it is part of a cycle track. Otherwise I ride on the road. I also stop at traffic lights.

        Not all cyclists are the same. That’s like saying all dog owners don’t pick up dog mess. Which of course is not true at all.

        Please don’t judge everyone the same as there is always some that ruin it for the others.

  6. Councillor MacRae – thank you for being a considerate and law abiding cyclist. A man after my own heart.
    Michael H – You don’t have to be a high court judge or qualified in law to read or understand the Highway Code’s rule 64 which states that you must not cycle on a pavement. Following the Highway Code also makes for a considerate road/pavement user.

  7. Just for the record.. I don’t recall saying that I condone cycling on the pavement.. I have offered an explanation for why some may do so.. I haven’t got a bicycle (just Parkinson’s) and I haven’t cycled anywhere for must be 50 years.. I have yet to see what my view of the legal status of anything has relevance except perhaps to say that publishing. an “opinion” that may be construed as advice is at best inadvisable .I have family members that do cycle and I would like them to be as safe as possible when they are out and about

    1. Michael H – agreed! We all have family members who walk on pavements and I’m confident that we all want them to be as safe as possible when using those pavements for their proper purpose.
