Main Meetings by Zoom begin at 10a.m. Please join a few minutes earlier.
22nd June: ‘Great British Eccentrics’ by Paul Robbins.
‘Paul makes each talk enjoyable and informative (Great British Eccentrics is very funny!) and they all include an element of surprise’ – quote from his webpage.
27th July: ‘A Study in SHERLOCK’ by Stephen Wells. The Story of SHERLOCK HOLMES.
Was Sherlock Holmes based on a real person? Who was Moriarty? How did Conan Doyle begin writing? How it all began and why it continues to thrill every generation.
24th August ‘Roman York’ by Karen Adams, an archaeologist and historian who grew up in York and became extremely interested in the history of that city. Her talk covers “Discovering the evidence for the building of a fortress and Colonia of Eboracum.”
Tuesday 28th September at 10a.m. Main Meeting – A.G.M. in St. Leonard’s Community Centre, Wollaton.
Message from Allan, Chair Wollaton u3a
As we move into summer things begin to look a little brighter and longer sunny days are welcome.
However, there remains confusion about how we will escape from this dreaded Covid virus! It seems unlikely that we will be entirely free from some forms of restriction for a few months yet and in view of this, and to give our members the best protection, your committee has decided that for the months of July and August we will continue to run our Main Meetings by ZOOM. That said hopefully our Interest Groups can start to open up as these groups have fewer members.
In September we intend to hold our monthly meeting in St. Leonard’s Community Hall. This will be our first “Face to Face” meeting since February last year. This meeting will, hopefully, be a celebration of us getting back together. It will take the format of a brief AGM, an opportunity to renew your annual membership and, most importantly, meet and chat over a cup of tea or coffee and biscuits. We hope that we can organise some group discussions, on the morning, so that we can all chat about how Wollaton u3a should move forward.
In the meantime, enjoy the summer in your gardens (and the football and cricket if you are interested)!
Hands on Gardening Group
Our group of 7 gardeners is looking for new members to join us. We currently garden at the Canalside allotments, off Tom Blower Close, on adjoining plots, 205 and 206 and excitingly, we are about to take over a third plot. We usually meet at the allotments on Tuesday and Saturday mornings, but we can visit whenever we want, using our key safe system.
If you would like to join us as either a helper or a gardener, please contact Liz Smith, Convenor, for a visit: email@example.com
We continue to meet on the 2nd Wednesday Monthly at 10.00am using Zoom. The next meetings will be on 14 July and 11 August. But on 8 September we hope to hold a hybrid meeting i.e. Face to Face and by Zoom. See here for more details Wollaton U3A: Family History (u3asites.org.uk)
NEW INTEREST GROUPS
Unfortunately, rain prevented us from attending the Taster session at Wollaton Village Tennis Club, but there are two more opportunities – Friday, 25th. June from 2 – 3 p.m. and Tuesday 6th July 2 – 3 p.m.
Cost £5 which includes balls and rackets, if needed, and a warm up, a few racket skills and maybe some coaching, depending on numbers and standards.
Please contact Carol for more details: firstname.lastname@example.org
We are hoping to start an Opera Appreciation Interest group. Initially, the members of the group would watch an opera, chosen by the group’s members, on YouTube and then meet on Zoom to chat about it.
When it is safe to do so, members could meet face to face. In the future, they may wish to arrange a trip to a theatre.
Please contact Carol if you would be interested. email@example.com
Wellbeing in Nature.
Sadly, Elizabeth has decided that this new group cannot continue as there wasn’t enough interest.
COFFEE CLUB BY ZOOM
Zoom invitations will be sent to everyone for the next meeting on Friday, 2nd July and we’d be delighted to see you. If you would like to attend, but do not wish to speak, please tell Sarah.
BRING A FRIEND
The Committee would like to invite you, until further notice, to ‘bring’ a non-member, your partner or the person in your bubble, to any meeting which is open to all members, i.e. Virtual Pub, Coffee Club and the Main Meeting. If you prefer to listen and not chat, then that’s fine.
